William George Hines

William “Red” “Joe” George Hines, 86, of Berkshire (Speedsville), NY, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 1, 2014, with family by his side.

Born in Owego, NY, on April 21, 1927, Red was a son of the late Raymond and Edna Brink Hines.  A longtime resident of the area, he retired from NYSDOT in 1982 after several years of service.  After his retirement, he helped on local farms.  Red enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Dailey Hines, and his sons, Raymond Hines of Savannah, George (Edie) Hines of Willet, Wesley (Sarah) Hines of Newark Valley, Fred (Patty) Hines of Newfield, and Joel (Sandra) Hines of Berkshire.  He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Richard (Beverly) Mix of Aurora, Linda Morena of Homer, Connie (Howard) Miller of Cortland, Deborah (Placido) Corpora of NC, and Harold (Jacki) Mack, Jr. of PA; brothers, Merton (Pat) Hines of Newark Valley and Robert (Valena) Hines of Owego; sisters, Emily Edwards of Apalachin and Hattie Testa of Owego; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, step-great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his first wife, Alice Hines, in 1999; a daughter, Edna Shevalier in 2013; a brother, Corky Hines; and a sister, Louise VanVorce.

A graveside ceremony for Red and Alice will be held at the Virgil Rural Cemetery in the spring of the year.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Red may be directed to Hospicare, 172 E. King Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850.
