Walter J. Sandy, 85, of Cincinnatus, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at the Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland, NY.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, on June 16, 1932, Mr. Sandy was the son of the late William and Loretta Rosanski Sandy. A 1950 graduate of Cincinnatus Central School, he was a gifted athlete in soccer, basketball, and baseball, and, for several years, held various school records in track and field. He retired from ETL in Cortland where he had been employed as an electrician. Prior to ETL, he worked at Thompson Boat and Chris Craft Boat and was also a boat builder in Moravia. In his spare time, he loved bowling and playing pitch with his friends, hunting and fishing, and spending time with his family that loved him.
He is survived by his children, Mary (William) Guernsey of McGraw, Paul (Susan) Sandy of Truxton, Joan Coombs of Cincinnatus, Nancy Sandy of Trumansburg, and Janet Kitt of TX. He also leaves behind several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Stephanie Justice of NC; a sister-in-law, Janice Sandy of CA; and an aunt, Jessie Kurzawa of Brooklyn.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Inez M. (White) Sandy in 2006; a brother, John Sandy; and a sister, Florence Jordan.
A memorial service will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Paul Alciati officiating. Burial will be in Pitcher Cemetery at the convenience of the family. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Sandy may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
