Sherman F. Mauzy, 83, formerly of Cincinnatus, NY , passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford, NY.
Born on September 6, 1941, in Cortland, NY, Sherman was the son of the late Russell and Nellie Bush Mauzy Nefsey. After the death of his father, his mother married Harland Nefsey who was in Sherman’s life for over 50 years.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict from1959 until his honorable discharge in 1962. Following his military service, Sherman devoted over 35 years of his professional life to Paul Trinity, retiring in 2006.
Sherman was a member of the Berean Bible Church and was a member of the VFW Tioughnioga Post #2354 and the B.P.O.E. Lodge #748, both in Cortland. His passion for sports was evident; he remained a die-hard fan of the NY Yankees and NY Giants. In his leisure time, Sherman enjoyed fishing and bowling, hobbies that brought him great joy.
Sherman is survived by his loving family, including his daughters Sherry Byron of Cincinnatus, and Lauri Mauzy of Cortland, his sons Russell (Debra) Mauzy of Brooksville, FL, Scott (Kathy) Mauzy of McGraw and Steven Mauzy of Cincinnatus. He was a devoted grandfather to Josh (Nicole) Byron, Shelly Mauzy, Mathew (Haley) Yacavone, Meghan Mauzy, Savannah Mauzy, Eli Mauzy, Ethan Mauzy, Lukas Mauzy, and Remington Mauzy. He also cherished his great-grandchildren: Jace, Colton, James, Liliana, Everlyn, Raelyn, Ivy, and Charlie. Additional family includes step-grandchildren Tracie, Randy, and Lindsay, and his sister Jean Wood of Cincinnatus, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents and Harland Nefsey, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Johann Merchant Mauzy in 2018, his granddaughter Taylor Yacavone, and step-granddaughter Carrie.
The family will be present to receive friends at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, on Friday, January 24, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
