Olive W. Harvey, 93, of Cincinnatus, NY, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2011, at the Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland, NY.
Born on March 15, 1918 in the Town of Taylor (Solon Pond), Mrs. Harvey was the youngest child born to the late Frank S. and Lucy Potter Wood. A lifelong resident of Cincinnatus, she resided in the same home since 1922 and was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Cincinnatus. She graduated as Valedictorian from Cincinnatus Central School in 1936 and then continued her education at Cortland Normal School from 1936-1939. Shortly after that, she began teaching in a one-room school on the Brackel. In 1941, she began teaching at Cincinnatus Central School where she taught second grade until her retirement in 1973. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Cortland College in 1949 and her Master's Degree in Education from Cortland College in 1954. On July 23, 1955, she married Paul Harvey, also from Cincinnatus, who predeceased her on December 4, 1995.
Mrs. Harvey enjoyed feeding the birds, reading, knitting Christmas stockings, baking cookies, traveling, eating out and visiting with her many friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Rod) Comolli of Cincinnatus; her grandchildren, Bryan and Erin Comolli, both of Amsterdam, and her granddog, Max. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Jeanette Wood Byron and a special nephew, Curt (Debbie) Harvey; a brother-in-law, Lowell (Adah) Harvey of Ocala, FL; and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Jewell of Winston-Salem, NC, Mary (John) Davis and Ruth Esther (Dean) Delevan of Cincinnatus.
In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by a sister, Ilma Wood Givens; and brothers, Kirk, Cyril and Leon Wood.
A memorial service will be held at the United Presbyterian Church of Cincinnatus on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. with Fred M.S. Downs officiating. Burial will be in Cincinnatus Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY on Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Harvey may be directed to the Cincinnatus Emergency Squad, Cortland-Chenango Rural Services, or the United Presbyterian Church of Cincinnatus.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the nursing staff of 3 South at the CRMC for the care given during her time there.
