Nancy Glezen Kellogg Potter Byron, 74, of Cortland, NY passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at the Cortland Regional Medical Center, while surrounded by her family.
Nancy was born in Cortland, NY on June 12, 1935, a daughter of the late Donald Briggs and Florence Acker Glezen. A lifelong resident of the area, she served as treasurer and a volunteer for the DAV for many years where she also organized and cooked for many DAV fundraisers. She also served as a volunteer for the Cortland County Tourism and Information booth. She worked as an aid at Northwoods of Cortland and a home health aid for Cortland County. Nancy also sold real estate in New York and Virginia and drove school bus for the school districts of Cincinnatus, DeRuyter, and Smithfield, VA. She enjoyed playing cards with her many friends and had an immense love for animals, especially German Shepards and cats, always naming them either Sam or Samantha. Among other interests, she loved to collect books and was proud of her history books and cookbooks and also enjoyed completing crossword puzzles. In her spare time, she served as a volunteer for the Cincinnatus Emergency Squad. Nancy had many loves in her life, including horseback riding and the pride she took in her garden, however, there was no love greater than that for her late husband, Robert Potter, who was the true love of her life. A colorful, kind, and generous person, she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Carl and Nonie Kellogg and their daughter Celeste, Carol and Gary Miller and their children Ike and Jessica and grandchildren, Nathan, Rachel and Collin, and her "favorite," Donald and Steph Potter and their daughter Katie, all of Smithfield, VA; her stepchildren, Diane Haymaker and her daughter, Stacey of Chandler, AZ, Greg and Josette Potter and their children, Josh and Heather of Moravia, Brad and Tina Potter and their children, Joey and Steven of Goodyear, AZ, Todd and Dottie Potter and their children, Skye and Patrick of Mukilteo, WA, James and Linda Byron and their children, Wayne and Kevin of Tully, Cary Byron and Jean Bain and their son of Florida, Joanne and Salvatore Corvo and their son and daughter of Florida. She also leaves behind her daughter-in-law, Cathy Potter of Pitcher and Nancy's grandchildren, Brendon, K.C., and Justin; brothers-in-law, John King and Henry Knickerbocker both of Cincinnatus; stepsisters, Shirley King of Cincinnatus and Ada Harvey of Florida; a special cousin, Art Ptak; close friends, Jean and Charlotte Ellsworth of Cortland; and several step-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her children, Scott Potter, Patrick Potter, and Linda Kellogg Hawley; and two sisters, Barbara King and Patricia Knickerbocker.
A memorial service will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY on Friday, August 14, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. with Fred M.S. Downs officiating. Burial will be in Taylor Rural Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Those wishing to remember Nancy are kindly asked to consider the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #153, 91 Owego Street, Cortland, NY 13045.
