It is with deep and heavy sadness that we announce the death of Larry Gene Wood, who passed on May 6th in Weston, FL, at the age of 68.
A lifelong resident of South Otselic, he was better known to friends and family as “Granny.” Born on January 11, 1948, the oldest of four sons, to the late Eugene Leon Wood and Beatrice Mae Moore. Larry will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a loving fiancé, father and grandfather.
Larry graduated from South Otselic School in 1965 where he excelled at baseball, basketball and soccer. He played soccer and basketball in college and following his graduation from SUNY Cobleskill in 1968, he continued to excel at sports, namely softball and golf. Larry was a long-time member of the Knickerbocker Country Club. He was a lifelong fan of the Syracuse Orange, New York Yankees, and New York Giants.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping, or just taking long walks in the woods. He was happiest in his tree stand, "The Office”, where he filled most of his tags. He shared this love of the outdoors with his family and enjoyed passing on many of his skills to his children and grandchildren.
His career was largely spent in the rope braiding business, working at Continental Cordage in Cazenovia, from where he retired in 2003.
In their retirement, Larry and Joann enjoyed spending winters in the Fort Pierce and Vero Beach, FL, area where they soaked up the sunshine, relaxed on the beach and he continued working on his golf game. He also took this time to become an avid reader, both on and off line. He would share this love with many of his family and friends through daily Facebook messages on a variety of topics. He loved sharing all of this with the many visitors they had while they were there.
Larry’s greatest passion was his family. He could always be found supporting his fiancée, brothers, children and grandchildren in all of their various activities and sports. He always had a smile on his face and everyone who knew him, loved him.
He is survived by the love of his life, Joann Eaton Parker, his son and best friend, Eugene (Heather) Wood; beloved daughter, Daveni (Peter) Amos; grandchildren, Gabrielle, Griffin, Sophia and Vivian Amos and Ellie and Payne Wood; brothers, Gary (Sue) Wood, Jeffrey (Lori) Wood and Steven (Teri) Wood; several nieces and nephews; stepchildren Carly (Ty) Montgomery, Corbin Parker (Tracie) and their children, Alyssa Montgomery and Jordan Harmon and Joann's mother, Joan Eaton.
The family will be present to receive friends at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, on Wednesday May 18, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A private memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 19, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. with Jeanne Angell officiating.
