Karen L. Root

Karen L. Root, 72, of DeRuyter,  NY, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland, NY.

Born in Cortland on January 16, 1942, Karen was the daughter of the late Albert and Martha Hay Root.  A lifelong resident of the area, she was a graduate of Truxton High School.  She was an avid bowler and enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and hunting.  She worked at Smith Corona until their closing and was then employed as a housekeeper at Cazenovia College, the Comfort Inn, and DeRuyter Central School.

She is survived by sisters, Deanna (Chuck) Gower, Tootsie (Larry) McCall, Sandra Tiffany, Jeanne Hurlbert, and Carol Gulini; brothers, Bill Root and Donald (Rosie) Root; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Pamela Guy, Patricia Mead, and Beverly Marcey; and her companion, Donald Mead.

A memorial service will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at 11:00 a.m.  with Pastor Matthew Smith officiating.  There will be no prior calling hours.
