Joyce E. Whitney, 71, of McDonough, NY, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at her home.
Joyce was born in Hallstead, PA on November 10, 1941, a daughter of the late Alvin and Dorothy Cornell Slater. A longtime resident of this area, she enjoyed painting, gardening, and watching the birds. She loved her family dearly and especially enjoyed the magic of the Christmas season.
She is survived by her children, Debra (Georgia Foster) Whitney of Afton, Donald (Martha) Whitney of Greene, Stanley (Mary) Whitney of E. Freetown, Lisa (Rick) Nauseef of McGraw, and Crystal (Wade Woodard) McFall of E. Freetown. She also leaves behind her brothers, Alvin (Cheryl) Slater, Harold Slater, and Frank (Sherry) Slater, all of Hallstead, PA; her sisters, Shirley Jackson and her son, John Lamoreaux of Hop Bottom, PA, and Carol (Richard) Szymanski of Johnson City; an uncle, Harold (Barb) Slater of Hallstead, PA; 18 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; close friends, Charles and Diane of Taylor; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Gail E. Whitney, in 2001.
Funeral services will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Peter Bush officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Cortland. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the service at 11:00 a.m. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Joyce may be directed to the ASPCA, 879 McLean Road, Cortland, NY 13045.
