Josephine “Josie” A. Smith, 90, of Pitcher, NY, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2013, at the home of her daughter.
Born in Santa Rosa, CA on February 5, 1923, Josie was a daughter of the late Leslie and Josephine (Lowery) Westfall. A longtime resident of Pitcher, she was a communicant and one of the founding members of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Cincinnatus, where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She retired from Craine & Mirabito Insurance Company, Sherburne, where she had worked for several years. She had also served as the Town of Pitcher Justice for 30 years. In her spare time, she spent many hours volunteering at Cortland-Chenango Rural Services. She enjoyed bowling and playing golf and pinochle.
She is survived by her children, John (Mary Reta) Smith of Hannibal, Alice Burnett of Afton, and Maryann (Steven) Metcalf of Pitcher. She also leaves behind a daughter-in-law, Christine Smith of Corning; ten grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, Lloyd Smith, in 2001; a son, Fred Smith, in 2008; a daughter, Rosemary Metcalf, in 2003; a grandson, Tim Metcalf, in 1996; and a brother, Edward Westfall, in 2005.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Monday, June 17, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Donald Cunningham as celebrant. Burial will be in Pitcher Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends at the church from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m., prior to the Mass.
