John F. Young, Sr.

John F. Young, Sr., 82, of Willet, NY, passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2011, at the Moffit Cancer Center, Tampa, FL, while surrounded by his family.

John was born in Torrington, CT on August 12, 1929, a son of the late Charles and Bernice Young McArthur. A longtime resident of this area, he was a member of the Willet United Methodist Church. He retired from SUNY Cortland in 1993 after 16 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served our country from 1947-1948. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge #1512, Cortland, a member of the Broome County Carver's Guild, served as a volunteer at the Willet/Cincinnatus Center, served as Willet Town Board member for 12 years, and was a former member of the Willet Fire Department. John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, he will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Ida W. Young of Willet; and his children, Adele (Ed Mack) Guy of Port Byron, Harold (Barbara) Todd and Frank Todd, all of Arizona, Melony (John) Warwick, and John Young, Jr., all of Cortland, and Robin (Michael Guasp) Young Melvin of Virginia. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY on Friday, December 16, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Thanna Howell officiating. Burial will be in Willet Cemetery at a later date. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in memory of John may be directed to the Willet United Methodist Church, Willet, NY 13863, or the Moffit Cancer Center, 12902 Magnolia Drive, Tampa, FL 33612.
