John Joseph Malmquist, 69, of McDonough, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at his home.
Born in the Bronx, NY, on October 2, 1952, John was the son of the late Eugene and Marie Fusco Malmquist. His family moved to McDonough in 1968 and he was a graduate of Cincinnatus Central High School and SUNY Cortland. After graduating college, traveling across the county, and starting his working career in CNY at S&D Petroleum, he realized he was an entrepreneur at heart and moved back to NYC where he operated a branch of the family business and luncheonette. The draw of being closer to family and a quieter life led him back to McDonough, where he met his loving wife, Joanna and raised two beautiful sons. He owned and operated two Villa Pizza locations, one in South Otselic and the former Cincinnatus Hotel, and later a water well drilling company with his father-in-law. After that his working career was with Raymond Corporation and P&G Pharmaceuticals, until his retirement.
John enjoyed the quiet life of the country, attending auctions, dabbling in fungiculture (mushroom farming), trying his hand at growing grapes, and tending his many fruit trees, or making pizza and Easter pies for his family, and spending time with his dear cousins during hunting season and summer family reunions. But most of all doing the things he loved with his wife, two sons, and grandsons.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joanna (nee Brewer); their two sons, Anthony (Pheobe) and Joseph; two beloved grandsons, Carter and Levi; his sisters, Joanne (Robert) Livermore and Elizabeth (Stuart) Loewenstein; nieces and nephews. John is also survived by two beloved aunts and many cousins that were very dear to him.
The family will be present to receive friends at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, on Sunday, May 1, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A graveside prayer and burial will be held at St. Raymond’s Cemetery, 2600 Lafayette Avenue, Bronx, NY, at a later date. Details for the burial will be posted when available. Expressions of sympathy in memory of John may be directed to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
