Donald C. Nogva, 74, of German, NY, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland, NY, while surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born in Brooklyn, NY, on December 21, 1947, the son of the late Amund “Skip” and Josephine Piper Nogva. He was a 1965 graduate of Cincinnatus Central School and had attended the German Baptist Church. In 1968, he entered the U.S. Navy where he proudly served aboard the USS Ranger aircraft carrier. Don was proud of his military service and was a former member of the Greene American Legion Post #692. He retired from J&B Welding after 25 years of service. He had also owned and operated Don’s Amoco and there wasn’t an engine he could not fix. He loved to restore and rebuild engines (Chevy trucks being his favorite) and was an incredible auto mechanic. He served as councilman for the Town of German for 22 years and also as the German Town Historian. Don was an avid NASCAR fan who enjoyed following his favorite drivers – Dale Earnhardt and Kevin Harvick. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and riding his Harley. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Don will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Cyndi Tennant Nogva; a daughter, Danielle (Rich) Byron of German; and grandchildren, Olivia and Julia Byron. He also leaves behind his sisters, Judy Williams of PA, Dorothy (Jerry) Hilsinger of TX, and Karen Nogva of PA; dear friends, Rich Byron, John Tennant, John “Brock” Livermore, Brad Burke, and Bob Turshman; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Cynthia Nogva; a sister-in-law, Beth Bays; brothers-in-law, Kevin Bays, Robert Williams, and Aaron Congdon; mother-in-law, Hazel Tennant; a niece, Karen Rodriguez; and nephews, Chris Tennant and Jeremy Temple.
A Celebration of Don’s Life will be held at the German Town Hall on Sunday, November 13, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend George McKeel officiating. A time of fellowship will follow the memorial service on November 13, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at the Willet/Cincinnatus Sr. Center. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Don may be directed to the Westview Cemetery Association, c/o Cyndi Nogva, 197 County Road 5, McDonough, NY 13801.
