Donald W. Batting, 90, of Cortland, NY and formerly of Schenectady, NY, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2015, at the Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca, NY.
Mr. Batting was born in Niagara Falls, NY on April 14, 1924, the son of the late Robert and Kate Ainsworth Batting. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946. He was a member of the Salvation Army and was active with the Salvation Army Band. He retired from Union College, Schenectady, after several years of working at the Athletic Department.
He is survived by his children, Dawn (Gary) Conboy of Fredericksburg, VA; Ken (Norine) Batting of Cohoes, and Roberta Batting of Cortland. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Danielle (Ken) Notari, Kyle (Maria) Conboy, Kelly (Ed) Ford, Don (Alice) Batting, Chris Batting, Sherry Dibble, Gary Dibble, Mike Totman, Rob Porter, and Jason (Nina) Porter; 16 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Ray Porter of Whitney Point; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Norma Batting, in 1993, step-daughter, Hermoine Porter in 2011; a grandson, Randy Porter in 2009; brothers, Robert and Bill Batting; and a sister, Doris Smith.
Funeral services will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY on Monday, January 5, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. with his nephew, Terry Lynch, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Lisle Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Batting’s memory may be made to the Salvation Army in Binghamton or Schenectady.
