Charles S. Underwood

Charles S. Underwood, 84, of Berkshire, NY, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at his home, while surrounded by his family.

Born in Lisle, NY on October 15, 1932, Mr. Underwood was the third oldest child raised on a farm in Nanticoke, NY.  He worked as a barber for 60 years and was the proprietor of the Ahwaga Barber Shop, Owego, NY, where he apprenticed many barbers along the way.  He was a member of the Berkshire Congregational Church.  He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was also a member of the Berkshire Sportsmen’s Club and the Berkshire Rod and Gun Club.  Mr. Underwood was also a lifetime member of the Berkshire Fire Department.  He enjoyed elk hunting and made several trips west to hunt, mostly to his favorite place, Montana.  Many of his hunting trophies may be seen at his barber shop in Owego where his son Jim is now the proprietor.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean Foux Underwood; sons, James (Cindie Bobnick) Underwood of King Ferry and John (Tracey) Underwood of Genoa; and his daughters, Terri (David) Banks of Sidney, Lisa (Michael) Michaud of Berkshire, and Lynn (James) Rosenberger of Athens, PA; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.  He also leaves behind his brothers, George Underwood,  Douglas Underwood and Gary Underwood, all of FL; his sisters, Lillian Underwood, Leora Cole, and Barbara Hamilton, all of FL, Betty Judd of Center Lisle, and Dorothy Altavilla of AZ; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves behind his faithful canine companions Rex and Sophi.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a great-granddaughter, Brianna Olcott; and brothers, Fred and Harry Underwood.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Underwood may be made to the Berkshire Congregational Church, 12445 NYS Route 38, Berkshire, NY 13736.
