Beatrice H. Sergent

Beatrice H. Sergent, 83, of Taylor, NY, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse, NY, with her family by her side.

Bea was born in Cortland, NY on February 28, 1930, a daughter of the late Floyd and Mary Church Hopkins.  A longtime resident of the area, she was a member of the Willet United Methodist Church.  Her working career took her to Smith-Corona, Upstate Medical Center, and Cornell University, ending with her retirement from the Cortland County Health Department.  Bea was an avid bowler and had belonged to several area leagues over the years.  She enjoyed reading and crocheting afghan’s for her family and friends.  Many babies were cuddled in the blankets she made.  When she retired, she enjoyed watching the birds, squirrels and chipmunks that gathered in her yard amongst her flowers and shrubs.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 51 years, Wayne Sergent; daughter, Sherry (Stanley) O’Neill; four grandchildren, Lori (Jeremy) Van Alstine of Watkins Glen, Michael (Audrey) Horrocks of FL, Sheldon (Gloria) O’Neill of Marathon, and Heather (Patrick) Silvanic; 15 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Sylvia (Richard) Flower of Macedon, Helen Jones of Syracuse, Deanna Grevelding of Cansetadine, and a brother, Nathan, of AZ.

In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her mother-in-law, Normina Sergent; sister, Mary Jane; and brothers, Art and Ralph.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the K. L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY on Monday, May 6, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. with Fred M.S. Downs officiating.  Burial will be in Taylor Rural Cemetery.  The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Bea may be directed to St. Joseph’s Dialysis Services, 3993 West Rd., Cortland, NY 13045.
