Anna K. Brookes

Anna K. (Kipp) Brookes, 95, of Homer, NY, and formerly of Marathon, NY, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2019, at the Cortland Regional Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Cortland, NY.

Born in Weehawken, NJ, on February 1, 1924, Mrs. Brookes was the daughter of the late Hiram and Irene Schem Kipp.  A longtime resident of the area, she proudly served in the U.S. Navy Waves as a radio operator during WWII.  She was a member of the United Community Church of Cortland.  She also volunteered in the Lay Ministry Program of the United Church of Christ for over 25 years and served as the pastor of the Coventryville Congregational Church for five years.  She retired from the Cortland County Office of the Aging in 1986.  She had also worked for Cortland County Department of Social Services for seven years and the NYS Department of Mental Hygiene for seven years.  Mrs. Brookes served as the full-time girl scout executive for Cortland County for three years and was a member and past president of the Marathon Central School Board of Education.

She is survived by her children, John Brookes of Marathon, Barbara Hulslander of Ormond Beach, FL, Irene Mulcahy of Ireland, and Linda Stewart of Clifton Park.  She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Cifonelli; a grandson, Robert Stewart; and sisters, Irene Thomas and Mildred Powers.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no prior calling hours or funeral service.  Friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Monday, September 16, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Dean Borgman officiating at the Freetown Cemetery.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the K.L.
