Alberta “Betty” B. (Brown) Owen, 94, of McGraw, NY, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2025, at the Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland, NY, with her children by her side.
Born March 25, 1931 in East Homer, NY, Alberta was the daughter of the late Willard and Thelma Welch Brown. She was a graduate of Truxton Central School and Cortland Business School. Prior to her retirement, she was employed at Cortland Memorial Hospital as the secretary to the Administration Department and later to the medical staff. On November 4, 1955, she married Robert E. Owen in Homer, NY, who predeceased her in 2018. Together, they owned and operated the Empire Inn in McGraw, NY. In her spare time, Alberta enjoyed refinishing furniture, antiques, home decorating and gardening.
Alberta leaves behind twin daughters, Debra Owen-Kilburn and her husband Shawn of York, PA, Diane Reif and her husband Mark of Cato, Donna Neff and companion Michael Natale of Cortland; sons, Robert M. Owen of McGraw and John Owen of Burlison, TN. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Seaman and brother Charles (Arlene) Brown, all of Truxton; eleven grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband of 63 years, she was also preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Brown, Richard Brown, Frederick Brown; and a sister, Jean (Brown) Hulbert.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no immediate services. After cremation, she will be buried with her husband in McGraw Cemetery at a date and time to be announced.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Vicky Falso and to the staff of the Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center for the special care they provided during their mom’s final days.
